The core of the eTrailer's functionality lies in its innovative design. A compact battery pack is mounted within the trailer’s undercarriage, and the conventional axle assembly is replaced with an electrified tandem. This combination creates both a drive module and an energy module that can be easily transferred to another trailer if necessary. Importantly, this setup does not require new connections on the tractor side, allowing standard seven- or nine-pin connectors and airlines to remain unchanged.
“Think of it like a liftgate or reefer unit,” Javidan explains. “It’s an accessory you can bolt on, but it transforms your trailer into an electric unit, effectively turning your tractor-trailer into a hybrid vehicle.” This innovative approach not only simplifies the installation process but also enhances the versatility of fleet operations.
Enhancing Safety and Stability During Transport
Safety is a primary focus in the design of the eTrailer, as emphasized by Javidan. Beyond mere fuel savings, the system's advanced control features allow for more precise modulation of the axle’s braking compared to traditional Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS). This precision translates to improved stopping distances, particularly in challenging conditions such as snow and ice.
“Our system has enough intelligence to sense when you’re going down a mountain grade and manage speed while recapturing energy,” Javidan states. For instance, on long routes like California’s Grapevine, the eTrailer can return over 50 kWh to the battery while keeping the brakes cool for emergencies, significantly enhancing safety during transport.
This level of control and intelligence was a key aspiration for Javidan, both as an engineer and a driver. He firmly believes that “driver experience and safety were always going to be my top priority. Decarbonization happens naturally when you electrify, but safety was our intention from the very beginning.” This commitment to safety ensures that drivers can operate with greater confidence and reduced fatigue.
Fuel Efficiency and Economic Benefits
One of the most compelling aspects of the eTrailer is its potential for fuel economy improvements. Range Energy has reported notable cases where the baseline tractor efficiency of 7-8 miles per gallon (mpg) has surged to 16-17 mpg after switching to an eTrailer. This boost in efficiency is even more pronounced on daily refrigerated routes, which leverage both propulsion and reefer power, yielding immediate benefits.
In flatter long-haul lanes, fleets can still expect a robust improvement of 10-20% in fuel efficiency. Javidan explains, “We approach this business in a fail-operational way. Even if you forget to charge it, you’ll still see 10-15% better fuel economy from regenerative braking alone. If the system faults, it freewheels like a standard trailer.” This reliability ensures that fleets can operate smoothly without significant disruptions.
Range Energy is targeting a three-year payback period for fleets that adopt the eTrailer, with many trailers expected to generate savings far exceeding their initial costs. The system is designed for longevity, typically lasting 10-12 years, often outliving the trailer body itself. This long-term value proposition makes the eTrailer an attractive investment for fleet operators.
Building Trust for Widespread Adoption
For the eTrailer technology to gain traction in the market, trust will be crucial at every level—from drivers and mechanics to fleet CFOs. Range Energy is collaborating with partners such as ZF to ensure that all components remain standard and serviceable. This approach not only simplifies maintenance but also encourages buyers to feel confident in their investment.
“We want to deliver a tool that minimizes disruption and provides real value,” Javidan asserts. “Some fleets will buy a few, while others may invest in larger quantities, but eventually, this technology will become a standard option in fleets across the country.” This gradual adoption model is indicative of the industry's broader shift toward electrification and enhanced safety measures.
