Launch of the Car Key Feature

The Car Key feature was first unveiled during Apple's WWDC 2020 event on June 22, 2020. It was part of a broader announcement regarding the next generation of CarPlay. While the primary focus of the event was on features slated for release with iOS 14, Car Key would be accessible for users starting from iOS 13.4 and later versions.

Apple’s collaboration with car connectivity standards groups allowed it to utilize the iPhone’s U1 ultra-wideband chip. This technology enables users to interact with their vehicles even when their phone is inside a bag or pocket, enhancing the overall usability of the feature. Initially, BMW became the first to adopt the Car Key feature, available exclusively for the 2021 BMW 5 Series. Adoption would gradually expand, with additional manufacturers joining the fold by 2025.

At the WWDC 2025, Apple announced that 13 new brands, including notable names like Cadillac and Porsche, would also begin supporting this innovative feature, marking a significant milestone in the integration of technology and automotive design.

Car Key allows iPhone users to replace traditional key fobs, enabling them to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles using the built-in NFC chip. Once a key is added to the Apple Wallet app, it can be used in "express mode" for quick access without requiring Face ID or a passcode.
